About the Cambodia Flag

The Cambodia flag is immediately recognisable for the white depiction of Angkor Wat set on a red band running through its centre, flanked above and below by two blue bands. It is the only national flag anywhere that features an image of a specific building, which makes it one of the more distinctive flags in South East Asia.

Colours and Symbolism

Blue and red are traditionally the colours of Cambodia, with blue representing the king and red representing the nation. White, used for the temple image itself, is generally associated with the country’s Buddhist religion. The three-towered silhouette of Angkor Wat, the twelfth-century temple complex near Siem Reap, is a source of national pride and a marker of Khmer civilisation reaching back centuries before the modern state, and it has appeared on Cambodian flags in one form or another since around 1875.

History of the Cambodia Flag

The blue-red-blue flag with Angkor Wat at its centre was used by the Kingdom of Cambodia through independence from France in 1953 and into the 1960s. A new flag was introduced in 1970 under the Khmer Republic, and during the Democratic Kampuchea period from 1976 a plain red flag carrying a yellow, three-towered Angkor Wat design was used instead, dropping the original blue and white colour scheme while keeping some form of the temple image. Following the Paris Peace Agreements and the United Nations-led transitional period in the early 1990s, the monarchy was restored, and the Cambodia flag was readopted in its familiar blue-red-blue form on 24 September 1993. The current flag is therefore closely modelled on the pre-1970 kingdom flag rather than being an entirely new design.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown at government buildings and temples and displayed prominently during national celebrations and royal ceremonies. Because the Angkor Wat image needs to be reproduced accurately, with its distinctive towers, printed versions of the Cambodia flag should follow the official proportions rather than a simplified silhouette. As with other national flags, it should be raised above any organisational or provincial flag flown alongside it.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
