Description

The Cook Islands flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Cook Islands Flag

The Cook Islands flag uses a blue field with the Union Jack placed in the upper hoist canton, in the style of several former British and Commonwealth territories in the Pacific. Set against the blue field is a ring of 15 white five-pointed stars, arranged in a circle to the right of the canton. The Cook Islands is a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, and its flag reflects both that historical relationship and its own distinct national identity.

Colours and Symbolism

The 15 stars on the Cook Islands flag represent the 15 islands that make up the country, arranged in a circle to suggest unity among islands scattered across a wide stretch of the South Pacific. The blue background echoes the surrounding ocean, a common choice among Pacific island flags. The Union Jack in the canton acknowledges the constitutional link to New Zealand, whose monarch remains head of state, while the stars give the flag a symbol that belongs to the Cook Islands alone.

History of the Cook Islands Flag

Earlier flags used in the Cook Islands included a green ensign bearing a different arrangement of stars, used from 1973. The current design, with its ring of 15 white stars, was adopted on 4 August 1979, and has remained the country’s flag since, even as its political status and level of self-government have been discussed and adjusted over the following decades. It replaced the earlier green version in order to bring the flag more clearly into line with other Pacific ensigns built around a blue field and the Union Jack.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Cook Islands flag is flown at government buildings on Rarotonga and the outer islands, and raised on national occasions such as Constitution Day, which marks self-government within New Zealand. As with other ensigns of this style, correct display keeps the Union Jack upright in the canton with the circle of stars set toward the fly. The flag is a familiar sight at Pacific regional gatherings and sporting events, where it distinguishes Cook Islands teams from those of neighbouring island nations.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
