About the Djibouti Flag

The Djibouti flag is divided into two horizontal bands, light blue above and light green below, with a white triangle at the hoist bearing a single red five-pointed star. It has represented the Republic of Djibouti, a small country on the Horn of Africa at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, since independence from France. The design draws on colours used by regional political movements in the years before independence, brought together into a single national symbol.

Colours and Symbolism

Light blue on the Djibouti flag is linked to the sky and sea and is associated with the Issa Somali community, while green represents the earth and is associated with the Afar community, the country’s two largest population groups. Together the two colours are read as a statement of unity between them. White in the triangle stands for peace, and the red star at its centre represents both the unity of the Djiboutian people and the country’s independence, echoing the single star used on several other flags from newly independent African states, including some of Djibouti’s neighbours on the Horn of Africa.

History of the Djibouti Flag

Djibouti gained independence from France on 27 June 1977, ending its status as French Somaliland and later the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. The flag adopted on independence combined colours already used by local political movements representing the Issa and Afar communities, an attempt to build a shared national symbol out of designs that had previously stood for separate groups. The Djibouti flag has remained unchanged since 1977, through the country’s single-party period and its later transition to multi-party politics.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Djibouti flag is flown at government buildings in Djibouti City and at ports and military installations along the coast, and is raised each year for Independence Day on 27 June. Given the country’s strategic position on major shipping routes, the flag is also a familiar sight at the naval and military bases operated by several foreign countries within Djibouti’s territory. Correct display keeps the white triangle and red star at the hoist, with light blue above and green below running toward the fly.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
