Description

The Ecuador flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Ecuador Flag

The Ecuador flag follows the horizontal yellow-blue-red pattern shared with several other South American nations that once formed Gran Colombia, but it’s distinguished by the elaborate coat of arms placed at its centre. The yellow band is twice the width of the blue and red bands beneath it.

Colours and Symbolism

Yellow is generally associated with the country’s mineral wealth, its grain harvests and the sun. Blue represents the sky, the sea and the rivers running from the Andes, and red recalls the blood spilled by those who fought for independence. The coat of arms at the centre features Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador’s highest peak, with a steamship on the Guayas River in the foreground and a condor perched above with wings spread, representing courage and sovereignty. A sun surrounded by zodiac signs marking the months of the independence uprising sits above the mountain.

History of the Ecuador Flag

The tricolour pattern traces back to the flag designed for Gran Colombia by Francisco de Miranda in the early 1800s, adopted by Ecuador after it broke from that union in 1830. The version with the current coat of arms was formally established as the national flag in 1900, and the arms themselves have been adjusted at various points since, most recently to refine the detail of the ship and condor.

A simpler civil flag without the coat of arms is used by ordinary citizens and businesses, while the state flag carrying the arms is reserved for government and official use, including at embassies and on naval vessels.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Ecuador flies its flag prominently on independence-related dates, including 10 August, marking the first call for independence in Quito in 1809. As with any flag carrying detailed heraldry, the coat of arms should be positioned centrally and the right way up when the flag is printed or sewn. Visitors will see the Ecuador flag flown alongside those of Colombia and Venezuela at regional gatherings, a visual reminder of the shared Gran Colombian origin of all three designs, even though each nation’s arms make its own flag unmistakable.

Ordering and Delivery

Every Ecuador flag is printed to order and dispatched from our Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Johannesburg branches, with courier delivery nationwide. Bulk and school orders are welcome — contact us for volume pricing on quantities of 10 or more.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
