About the Eswatini Flag

The Eswatini flag, representing the country formerly known as Swaziland, centres on a black-and-white warrior’s shield laid horizontally across a broad crimson band, itself framed by two blue stripes and thin yellow borders. It’s one of the few national flags built directly around a traditional weapon.

Colours and Symbolism

Blue stands for peace, and the crimson band recalls past battles fought by the Swazi nation. Yellow, forming the narrow borders between the stripes, represents the country’s mineral resources. At the centre lies a Nguni shield made from black and white ox hide, laid over a staff decorated with feather tassels and flanked by two spears. Black and white together are read as a symbol of racial harmony, black and white people living together in peace, while the shield and spears reference Swazi military tradition rather than any modern conflict.

History of the Eswatini Flag

This design traces back to a flag presented by King Sobhuza II in 1941 to the Swazi Pioneer Corps, a unit that served alongside British forces during the Second World War. That military banner formed the basis for the national flag adopted in October 1968, when the country gained independence from Britain as Swaziland. The country’s name changed to Eswatini in 2018, marking fifty years of independence, but the flag itself was unaffected by the change and has remained the same since 1968, making it one of the more stable designs on the African continent.

Eswatini flies its flag on Independence Day in October and on Umhlanga and Incwala, the country’s major traditional ceremonies, where national symbols feature heavily alongside cultural dress. The shield at the centre must be shown horizontally with the spears running the same direction as the stripes, not mounted vertically as some generic renderings mistakenly show it.
