About the Greenland Flag

Known locally as Erfalasorput, meaning “our flag,” the Greenland flag uses only two colours arranged in a striking, off-centre design. A white band sits above a red band of equal size, and a large disc straddles the two, positioned slightly toward the hoist rather than dead centre. The upper half of the disc is red and the lower half white, so each half of the circle stands out clearly against the opposite background band.

Colours and Symbolism

The red and white of the Greenland flag are often read as a nod to Denmark’s own flag, reflecting Greenland’s long constitutional relationship with Denmark, while also standing on their own as a description of the landscape. The white represents the vast ice sheet and snow that cover most of the island, and the red is often understood as the sun, glowing low on the horizon in a country where daylight itself varies dramatically through the year. The offset disc has been described as a rising or setting sun over ice and sea, an image well suited to a country defined by its Arctic light.

History of the Greenland Flag

Greenland did not have a flag of its own for most of its history as a Danish territory, flying the Danish flag instead. As home rule developed through the second half of the twentieth century, interest grew in a distinct Greenlandic symbol, and a public competition was held to choose a design. The result, created by the Greenlandic artist Thue Christiansen, was adopted on 21 June 1985, and it has been flown as Greenland’s official flag ever since, alongside the Danish flag, which remains in use given Greenland’s continued status within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Greenland flag is flown across the island on public buildings, at National Day celebrations on 21 June, and increasingly on private homes and boats as a mark of local identity. It is usually flown together with the Danish flag on official buildings, reflecting Greenland’s constitutional position. When displayed, the flag should be hung with the white band on top and the disc toward the hoist rather than the fly, so the design reads correctly. Its bold, simple geometry makes it easy to reproduce accurately, from small desk flags to large outdoor banners.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
