About the Guinea Flag

The Guinea flag is a simple vertical tricolour of red, yellow and green, running in that order from the hoist to the fly. It belongs to a wider family of Pan-African flags that share these same three colours, though Guinea’s particular arrangement, red first, is what sets it apart from several of its West African neighbours.

Colours and Symbolism

Red on the Guinea flag is generally understood to represent the blood shed by those who fought for the country’s independence, along with the labour and sacrifice of its people. Yellow stands for the sun, for the country’s mineral wealth, particularly its large bauxite reserves, and for justice, while green represents the country’s vegetation and its solidarity with the rest of Africa. Together the three colours draw on the pan-African palette first popularised by Ethiopia’s flag, a design that inspired newly independent African states throughout the twentieth century, including Guinea.

History of the Guinea Flag

Before independence, Guinea was part of French West Africa and flew the French tricolour. The territory broke decisively from France in 1958, becoming the first French colony in West Africa to vote for full independence rather than continued association with France, and it adopted its own flag that same year. The red-yellow-green vertical design echoes the flag Ghana had adopted the year before, when it became independent, reflecting the pan-African political links between the two countries’ early leaders. Guinea’s flag has not changed since it was first raised in 1958.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Guinea flag flies over government offices, schools and border posts throughout the country, and it is raised in large numbers around Independence Day on 2 October. Its plain vertical bands make it simple to produce and easy to recognise, whether on a full-size flagpole or a small desk flag. Guinean embassies fly it alongside the flag of their host country, and it appears at regional and international sporting events whenever Guinean teams take part. As with any vertical tricolour, care should be taken to keep red at the hoist rather than reversing the order of the bands.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
