About the Honduras Flag

Five blue stars set against a white stripe give the Honduras flag its most distinctive feature, arranged between two outer bands of blue. The design links Honduras visually to its Central American neighbours, since several countries in the region share the same blue-white-blue layout, each with its own arrangement of stars or emblems in the centre.

Colours and Symbolism

The two blue stripes are read as representing both the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Caribbean Sea to the north, framing the country between two coastlines, while also standing for the sky and for brotherhood among nations. The white stripe in between represents the land itself, along with peace and purity of purpose. The five stars carry the flag’s central message: they stand for Honduras and the four other states that once formed the Federal Republic of Central America – Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica – and for the hope that those nations might one day reunite.

History of the Honduras Flag

The blue-white-blue triband has its roots in the flag of the United Provinces of Central America, the short-lived federation Honduras belonged to after breaking from Spanish rule in the 1820s. When that federation collapsed, Honduras eventually adopted its own version of the design, formalised by legislative decree on 16 February 1866 under President José María Medina, with the five stars added to commemorate the old union. The proportions and specifications were refined further in 1949, but the essential design chosen in 1866 has remained the Honduras flag ever since. Honduras had briefly used other emblems during the turbulent years after the federation broke apart in the 1830s, so the 1866 decree effectively settled a question the young republic had wrestled with for decades.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Public buildings, schools and many homes across Honduras fly the flag on national holidays, including Independence Day on 15 September, which is shared with the wider Central American isthmus. As with the neighbouring flags it resembles, care should be taken to note the exact star arrangement, since a Honduras flag with five stars is easily confused with similar tricolours from El Salvador or Nicaragua at a glance.
