History of the Flag

The present-day flag of Iran was adopted on July 29, 1980 , following the Islamic Revolution. However, Iran's flag has seen several transformations throughout history, reflecting the country's complex political landscape and shifting power dynamics.

Symbols and Colours

The Iran flag consists of three horizontal bands: green (top), white (middle), and red (bottom). Each colour has a distinct meaning: the green symbolises the Islamic religion ; the white stands for peace ; and the red signifies courage . At the centre of the flag, there's the Emblem of Iran, representing the word "Allah", and the phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is the greatest) is written in Kufic script 11 times at the edges of the bands.

The Country's National Anthem

Iran's national anthem is entitled " Sorude Melliye Jomhouriye Eslamiye Iran " or "National Anthem of the Islamic Republic of Iran." It was adopted in 1990 and reflects the country's Islamic character and commitment to the cause of freedom and independence.

Flag Protocol

Like all nations, Iran has specific rules concerning its flag. The flag must be hoisted high and not allowed to touch the ground. It is traditionally raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. It should not be displayed upside down or used in a disrespectful manner.

Evolution of the Flag

The flag of Iran has experienced several changes over the centuries. The current flag, with its religious emblem and inscriptions, was designed following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and replaced the previous design, which featured a lion and sun motif.
