About the Macedonia Flag
The flag widely known as the Macedonia flag belongs to the country now officially named North Macedonia, and it shows a golden sun with eight broadening rays reaching out to the edges of a red field. It was adopted on 5 October 1995, replacing an earlier post-independence design, and the layout has stayed the same even as the country’s name changed in 2019.
Colours and Symbolism
Red is the background colour across the whole Macedonia flag and is associated, as it is on many national flags, with the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for the country. The golden sun at the centre, sometimes described as a new sun of liberty, represents freedom and a fresh start following independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Its eight rays extend all the way to the flag’s edges rather than stopping short, which is one of the design features that sets it apart from other sun-based flags used elsewhere in the region.
History of the Macedonia Flag
The first flag flown after independence, used from 1992 to 1995, carried the Vergina Sun, an ancient sixteen-rayed emblem linked to the royal house of ancient Macedon and, by extension, to Philip II and Alexander the Great. Greece objected strongly to that design, arguing it laid claim to a symbol and history it considered exclusively Greek, and the dispute became part of a much longer disagreement between the two countries over the use of the name Macedonia itself. As part of an interim accord with Greece, the government replaced the Vergina Sun in 1995 with the current eight-rayed sun design, which has no direct link to the ancient royal emblem. The flag itself did not change again when the country was renamed North Macedonia under the 2018 Prespa Agreement, which took effect in 2019 and settled the long-running naming dispute with Greece.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Macedonia flag is flown outside government buildings across North Macedonia and is prominent during Independence Day on 8 September, marking the 1991 referendum that led to independence from Yugoslavia. Because of its history, the flag’s design remains a point of national pride distinct from the naming dispute that dominated the country’s international relations for so long, and it continues to appear at sporting events and official ceremonies under its current, uncontested form.

We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.
