About the Mauritania Flag

A gold crescent and a gold star sit on a green field at the centre of the Mauritania flag, with a red stripe running along the top and another along the bottom. It is a relatively young design in its current form, having gained those red bands only within the last decade, well after the country’s independence.

Colours and Symbolism

Green and gold both point to Islam, the state religion, with the crescent and star long used across the Muslim world as shorthand for the faith. Green also stands more broadly for hope and for the country’s agricultural land, while gold echoes the sand of the Sahara, which covers most of Mauritania’s territory. The red bands added later carry a specific, deliberate meaning: they represent the blood shed by those who fought and died for Mauritania’s independence and in its later struggles, a detail the earlier all-green Mauritania flag did not include.

History of the Mauritania Flag

The original flag, showing only the green field with its gold crescent and star, was adopted on 1 April 1959, ahead of independence from France the following year. It remained unchanged for nearly six decades. In 2017, the government put a package of constitutional changes, including the addition of red stripes to the flag, to a national referendum. Voters approved the change by a wide margin, and the amended Mauritania flag was formally established by decree later that year, with the new version raised officially on 28 November 2017, the country’s independence anniversary.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown across government buildings in Nouakchott and other towns, and is especially prominent around Independence Day on 28 November, which now also marks the anniversary of the current design. When displayed, the green field with its crescent and star should sit between the two red bands, which run the full width of the flag at top and bottom rather than appearing only as a border. Because the red stripes are a fairly recent addition, older Mauritania flags without them still turn up in circulation, so it is worth checking that any flag reflects the post-2017 design.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
