Description

The Mongolia flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Mongolia Flag

The Mongolia flag is a vertical triband of red, blue and red, with a golden Soyombo emblem set into the stripe nearest the pole. It has flown in its present form since 1992, when a newly democratic Mongolia stripped away the communist star that had topped the emblem for decades. The result is one of the more instantly recognisable flags in Asia, built around a symbol far older than the state that now flies it.

Colours and Symbolism

The central blue stripe stands for the eternal sky, a motif with deep roots in Mongolian belief that predates any modern political system. The red stripes on either side are read as representing prosperity, progress and the fire that sustains life on the steppe. Set against the hoist-side red stripe of the Mongolia flag is the Soyombo, a compact geometric emblem built from several older symbols stacked together.

  • Fire at the top, for growth and renewal
  • Sun and moon, for the eternity of the Mongolian people
  • Triangles, pointing down to signal the defeat of enemies
  • A yin-yang style pair of fish, said never to close their eyes, representing vigilance

History of the Mongolia Flag

The Soyombo symbol itself is centuries old, generally attributed to the scholar and artist Zanabazar in the seventeenth century, and it appeared on Mongolian state symbols long before the current tricolour existed. Under the Mongolian People’s Republic, the flag carried the same triband and Soyombo design but with a five-pointed red star above it, signalling the country’s alignment with the Soviet bloc. When Mongolia moved to multi-party democracy, parliament adopted the current Mongolia flag on 12 January 1992, removing the star and returning the Soyombo to its older, unadorned form. Official colour and proportion standards were only fixed later, on 8 July 2011, to keep manufactured flags consistent.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Mongolians fly the Mongolia flag on state holidays such as Naadam and Independence Day, and it appears outside government buildings, schools and border posts year-round. Protocol calls for the Soyombo to sit upright with the fire element at the top; flying it upside down changes the reading of the symbol and is considered a mark of disrespect. When a flag is retired, custom in Mongolia treats it with the same care given to other national symbols, rather than discarding it as ordinary cloth.

Ordering and Delivery

Every Mongolia flag is printed to order and dispatched from our Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Johannesburg branches, with courier delivery nationwide. Bulk and school orders are welcome — contact us for volume pricing on quantities of 10 or more.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
