Description

The Niger flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Niger Flag

The Niger flag is a horizontal tricolour of orange, white and green, with a small orange disc centred on the white stripe. Adopted just before independence in 1959, it is one of the simpler flags in West Africa, built from broad bands of colour rather than any coat of arms or lettering, and it is one of a small group of national flags whose whole design still fits on a single plain rectangle without a canton or emblem.

Colours and Symbolism

The orange stripe at the top is generally read as standing for the Sahara Desert region in the north of the country, while the green stripe at the bottom represents the fertile farmland and grazing land found in Niger’s south. Between them, the white stripe stands for purity and for the Niger River itself, the waterway that gives the country its name and supports much of its agriculture. The orange disc set within the white band is usually described as representing the sun over the Sahel, though it has also been read as a stylised symbol of independence, a detail that gives the Niger flag its point of visual interest beyond the three plain bands.

History of the Niger Flag

The design was adopted on 23 November 1959 by the territorial assembly in Niamey, in the run-up to full independence from France the following year, and it was chosen partly to distinguish Niger from neighbouring former French colonies that had settled on green, yellow and red combinations. It has not been substantially altered since, making it one of the more stable national flags in the region despite Niger having gone through several changes of government, including periods of military rule and, more recently, further political upheaval. Through all of this the orange, white and green tricolour with its central disc remains the Niger flag flown today.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Niger flag is flown outside government buildings, schools and diplomatic missions, and is raised for Niger’s Independence Day on 3 August each year. Because the design uses plain horizontal bands with a single small disc, it holds up well even where flags see heavy outdoor use, since there is no fine detail to lose definition as fabric ages in sun and wind. The disc should sit centred on the white stripe, matching the sun-like symbol to the middle band of the flag rather than drifting toward either edge.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
