About the Niue Flag

The Niue flag is a golden yellow field bearing the Union Jack in the canton, with the canton itself modified by an added blue disc and a set of stars picking out the Southern Cross. Adopted in 1975 to mark Niue’s move to self-government in free association with New Zealand, it is one of the more unusual Pacific flags, combining a solid national colour with a British ensign-style corner.

Colours and Symbolism

The golden yellow background is described as representing both the bright Pacific sunshine over Niue and the warmth of the Niuean people’s relationship with New Zealand. Within the Union Jack canton, four small yellow stars are set along its arms in a diamond arrangement, standing in for the Southern Cross and marking the start of New Zealand’s administration of Niue in 1901. A fifth, larger star sits inside a blue disc at the centre of the canton, representing Niue itself set within the surrounding ocean. The Union Jack underneath acknowledges the period of British protection that began in 1900, one of the details that makes the Niue flag unusual among Pacific national flags.

History of the Niue Flag

Niue came under British protection in 1900 and was then annexed to New Zealand the following year, and for decades it used New Zealand’s own symbols rather than a flag of its own. That changed on 15 October 1975, when Niue became self-governing in free association with New Zealand and adopted the Niue flag, designed by Patricia Rex, wife of the island’s first premier, Sir Robert Rex. The design has not changed since it was first flown, and it remains one of the few Pacific island flags still built around a Union Jack canton.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Niue flag is flown at the island’s Assembly building and other government sites, and is raised for Constitution Day, which marks the anniversary of self-government. As with other ensign-style flags, correct display keeps the Union Jack canton in the upper hoist corner, closest to the pole, with the yellow field extending across the rest of the flag. It is often flown together with the flag of New Zealand, reflecting the free association between the two.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
