About the San Marino Flag

The San Marino flag is one of the oldest flag traditions in Europe, tied to a republic that has never been conquered or absorbed by a larger neighbour. It is a simple horizontal bicolour, white above light blue, with the state’s coat of arms placed at the centre in the version used on public buildings, while a plain bicolour without the arms serves as the ordinary flag flown by citizens. The coat of arms shows three towers on three peaks, representing the fortified towers of Monte Titano around which the republic grew, topped by a closed crown and flanked by branches of oak and laurel, with a scroll beneath reading “LIBERTAS”.

Colours and Symbolism

White is generally read as a symbol of peace, and the pale blue beneath it as a symbol of liberty, values San Marino has long associated with its status as one of the world’s oldest surviving republics. The three towers on the coat of arms – Guaita, Cesta and Montale – are the actual medieval fortifications that still stand on Monte Titano overlooking the capital, which ties the emblem directly to the republic’s own landscape. The crown above the towers stands for the sovereignty of the state, since San Marino has always been governed as a republic rather than a monarchy.

History of the San Marino Flag

San Marino traces its origins as a self-governing community back many centuries, and the colours white and light blue have long defined the San Marino flag, drawn traditionally from the snow-capped peak of Monte Titano set against the sky. The coat of arms was formally standardised by decree in April 1862, fixing the arrangement of the three towers, the crown, the wreath and the motto, though that decree dealt with the arms rather than the flag itself. Both the plain bicolour and the version bearing the coat of arms have remained in continuous use since, making the San Marino flag tradition one of the most stable in Europe.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Within San Marino, the version bearing the coat of arms is used by the state and its institutions, while the plain white-and-light-blue bicolour, without the arms, is the version generally flown by ordinary citizens and businesses. Visitors to Monte Titano will see the flag flown from the three medieval towers themselves, as well as from government buildings in the historic centre. As with the flags of other small European republics, the San Marino flag is often flown alongside the flag of the European Union and, at some sites, the Italian flag, reflecting San Marino’s position as a fully independent state surrounded entirely by Italian territory.
