The Slovakia flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Slovakia Flag

White, blue and red run across the Slovakia flag in three equal horizontal bands, with a shield bearing a silver double cross set off-centre toward the pole. That shield is what separates the flag from several other Slavic tricolours that use the same three colours, and it carries centuries of history behind a fairly simple-looking design.

Colours and Symbolism

White, blue and red are known as the Pan-Slavic colours, shared with Russia, Slovenia, Croatia and several other Slavic nations, and their use traces back to political movements in the nineteenth century that sought to express solidarity among Slavic peoples. On their own, the three stripes would look close to the Russian flag turned on its side, which is why the coat of arms matters so much to the design. The shield shows a silver double cross standing on three blue hills, set against a red field. The double cross is a long-standing Christian symbol used in Slovak heraldry, and the three hills are usually read as representing three mountain ranges connected to the Slovak lands: Tatra, Fatra and Matra, the last of which lies partly beyond the country’s present-day borders.

History of the Slovakia Flag

Versions of the white-blue-red tricolour were used by Slovak national movements from the nineteenth century onward, including during periods when Slovakia formed part of Czechoslovakia. The flag now in use, with the coat of arms positioned toward the hoist, was formally adopted on 3 September 1992, shortly before Slovakia and the Czech Republic separated peacefully at the start of 1993. Placing the shield off-centre was a deliberate decision, since a plain tricolour risked being confused with Russia’s flag on the international stage. The design is credited to Ladislav Čisárik and Ladislav Vrtel, and it has remained unchanged since independence, giving Slovakia one of the more visually distinct tricolours in Central Europe.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Slovakia flag is flown at government buildings throughout the year and is particularly prominent around Constitution Day on 1 September and the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising on 29 August. As with most flags carrying an off-centre emblem, it should always be hung with the coat of arms toward the hoist, never reversed, since flipping it changes the arrangement in a way that does not match any recognised version of the flag. Given how similar the base tricolour is to other Slavic flags, the coat of arms is the detail worth checking first when identifying a genuine Slovakia flag.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
