About the St Kitts and Nevis Flag

Diagonal bands of green, yellow, black and red cut across the St Kitts and Nevis flag, with two small white stars set into the black band at its centre. Adopted at independence in 1983, it was the result of a national design competition rather than a government commission, which gives it an unusually personal story for a national flag.

Colours and Symbolism

Green sits in the triangle nearest the hoist and stands for the islands’ fertile land. Red fills the triangle nearest the fly and recalls the long struggle against slavery and colonial rule endured by earlier generations. Between them runs a black diagonal band bordered on both sides by narrow yellow stripes, with black representing the African heritage of most of the population and yellow standing for the near-constant sunshine the islands enjoy. Two white five-pointed stars sit on the black band, and are usually read two ways at once: as a reference to the two islands of St Kitts and Nevis themselves, and as symbols of hope and liberty for the future.

History of the St Kitts and Nevis Flag

Before independence, the two islands used a colonial flag as part of the British-administered associated state, along with earlier Union Flag arrangements. As the country prepared for full independence from Britain, a public competition was launched to design a new national flag, and the winning entry came from Edrice Lewis, a young St Kitts and Nevis student, chosen from around 258 submissions. The flag was formally adopted on 19 September 1983, the same day the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis became independent, and it has served as the national flag ever since without any changes to the design.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The St Kitts and Nevis flag is flown at government buildings across both islands and is especially prominent around Independence Day on 19 September. Because the diagonal band runs from the lower hoist to the upper fly, the flag must be hung the correct way round for the two stars to sit properly on the black stripe, with green kept toward the pole. The strong diagonal design and contrasting colours mean the flag remains clearly identifiable even at a distance or in a light breeze, a useful quality for a flag so often flown outdoors in a Caribbean climate.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
