About the St Vincent and the Grenadines Flag
The St Vincent and the Grenadines flag is one of the few national flags to feature a distinctive three-diamond emblem, giving it an immediate character among Caribbean flags. It flies over the mainland island of Saint Vincent and the many smaller Grenadine islands that make up the nation, and it has represented the country since the mid-1980s. The design is simple enough to recognise at a distance yet carries meaning specific to the islands it represents.
Colours and Symbolism
The flag is divided into three vertical bands of blue, gold and green, with the gold band widest in the centre. Blue stands for the sky and the Caribbean Sea that surrounds the islands, green represents the lush vegetation, and gold reflects the warmth of the sun and the spirit of the people. Set within the gold band are three green diamonds, arranged in a broken diagonal that some describe as forming the letter V, a nod to the country’s name. The diamonds are often referred to locally as the “Gems of the Antilles”, representing the string of Grenadine islands strung out below the mainland.
History of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Flag
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from Britain on 27 October 1979, and its first national flag combined a blue, gold and green tricolour with a breadfruit motif and the national coat of arms placed in the centre. That design proved difficult to reproduce well at a distance and was not universally popular. On 21 October 1985, the government replaced it with the current St Vincent and the Grenadines flag, removing the coat of arms and breadfruit in favour of the cleaner three-diamond arrangement still used today. The change simplified the flag considerably while keeping the same three national colours that had been used since independence.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The St Vincent and the Grenadines flag is flown at government buildings, schools and ports throughout the islands, and prominently during Independence Day celebrations each October. As with most Caribbean flags of this style, it is typically displayed with the diamonds upright and the wider gold band running through the centre; flying it upside down or with the bands transposed is considered poor form. It is a common sight on yachts and inter-island ferries given the nation’s reliance on maritime trade and tourism between Saint Vincent and its outlying Grenadine islands, including Bequia, Mustique and Canouan.
