About the Turkmenistan Flag

The Turkmenistan flag is a green field carrying a vertical stripe of traditional carpet patterns near the hoist, along with a white crescent moon and five stars, making it one of the more visually detailed national flags in use today. It has flown over this Central Asian republic since shortly after independence from the Soviet Union, and its carpet motifs are unique among the world’s flags.

Colours and Symbolism

Set into the green field near the hoist is a red vertical stripe containing five carpet guls, the geometric patterns traditionally woven by five historic Turkmen tribal groups into their carpets and rugs. Below the guls sit two crossed olive branches, added to mark Turkmenistan’s declared status as a permanently neutral state. In the upper hoist area of the green field, a white crescent moon and five five-pointed stars represent hope for the future and the country’s five provinces. Green is closely associated with Islam and with hospitality in Turkmen culture, and it also nods to the desert oases that support life across much of the country.

History of the Turkmenistan Flag

Turkmenistan adopted its first post-Soviet national flag on 24 January 1992, not long after declaring independence, replacing the red Soviet-era republic flag. The carpet-gul stripe was included from the start as a way of grounding the new flag in a craft with deep roots in Turkmen life. In 1995, the United Nations recognised Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, and the government marked this in 1997 by adding the two olive branches beneath the guls on the Turkmenistan flag. A further minor revision followed in 2001, refining the arrangement of the guls within the stripe.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Turkmenistan flag is flown at government buildings throughout the country and features heavily in the celebrations around Independence Day on 27 October and Neutrality Day on 12 December. A large flagpole in the capital, Ashgabat, has at various times ranked among the tallest in the world, underlining the prominence given to the flag in public life. Correct display keeps the carpet stripe at the hoist with the guls upright and the crescent and stars positioned above it in the green field.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
