About the Turks and Caicos Islands Flag

The Turks and Caicos Islands flag follows the familiar pattern of a British overseas territory ensign, with the Union Jack in the canton and a local coat of arms in the fly. It represents this group of islands at the southeastern end of the Bahamas chain, known for salt production in earlier centuries and for diving and tourism today, and it has taken its present form since the end of the 1990s.

Colours and Symbolism

Against the dark blue field of the ensign, the Union Jack signals the territory’s constitutional relationship with the United Kingdom. The shield in the fly carries three emblems tied closely to island life: a spiny lobster, a conch shell, and a Turks head cactus, the plant from which the islands are said to take part of their name. Together these represent the fishing industry that has long sustained the islands and the distinctive local flora, giving the Turks and Caicos Islands flag symbols that are specific to the territory rather than generic colonial imagery.

History of the Turks and Caicos Islands Flag

The islands have used a Blue Ensign defaced with a local badge since the late 1960s, when they were administered separately from Jamaica following that country’s independence. The coat of arms has been revised more than once since then, and the version of the Turks and Caicos Islands flag flown today dates from 7 November 1999, when the current arms depicting the lobster, conch and cactus were formally adopted. Earlier versions of the badge used broadly similar imagery but with a different shield shape and artistic treatment.

The Turks and Caicos Islands flag is flown at government offices, ports and schools across Providenciales, Grand Turk and the other inhabited islands, and is raised for public holidays including National Heroes Day. As with other Blue Ensign-based flags, it is displayed with the Union Jack canton at the upper hoist corner and the coat of arms centred in the fly. It also appears on vehicle registration plates and official documents throughout the territory, making it a familiar part of everyday life for residents alongside its ceremonial use.

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
