About the Venezuela Flag

The Venezuela flag traces its roots back further than almost any other flag in South America, to a design first raised in 1806 by the independence leader Francisco de Miranda. Today it appears as a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue and red, with a curved arc of eight white stars across the blue band. The Venezuela flag in its current form dates only to 2006, when an eighth star was added, but its basic three-colour structure has endured for more than two centuries.

Colours and Symbolism

Yellow, at the top of the Venezuela flag, is generally read as representing the country’s wealth and its land, along with ideas of harmony and sovereignty. Blue in the centre stripe is tied to the Caribbean Sea, and is sometimes described as marking the separation from Spain during the independence struggle. Red at the bottom stands for the courage of those who fought for independence, and is sometimes described as bringing the other two colours together. The stars across the blue stripe originally numbered seven, representing the provinces that signed Venezuela’s declaration of independence; the eighth, added in 2006, honours Guayana province. On the state version of the flag, a coat of arms is also displayed, though the plain tricolour with stars is used for general civil purposes.

History of the Venezuela Flag

Miranda first flew his yellow, blue and red design in March 1806 off Jacmel, Haiti, before bringing it to Venezuelan shores later that year. The design went on to influence the flags of Colombia and Ecuador, all of which share the same three colours in different arrangements, a legacy of the shared independence movement across northern South America. Stars were added through the nineteenth century to mark the provinces of the new republic, settling at seven for well over a hundred years. The most recent change came in 2006, when the eighth star was added by decree, alongside a shift of the country’s official Flag Day from March to August to mark Miranda’s first landing.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Venezuela flag is flown widely across government buildings, schools and public plazas, particularly around Independence Day in July. The civil flag, without the coat of arms, is the version most commonly seen in general use, while the state flag with its full coat of arms is reserved for government and military purposes. Anyone sourcing one should check whether the eight-star civil version or the coat-of-arms state version is required, since the two are used in different contexts.
