About the Belize Flag

The Belize flag is one of the few national flags to feature people rather than abstract symbols, with a mestizo and a Creole woodcutter standing either side of a coat of arms at the centre of a blue field. It began life decades before the country’s independence, as the emblem of a political party, and only later became a national symbol, giving it an unusually long and specific history for a Central American flag.

Colours and Symbolism

The main blue field of the Belize flag represents the People’s United Party, which first used the design in the 1950s, while the thin red stripes along the top and bottom edges were added later to acknowledge the opposition United Democratic Party, making the finished flag a rare case of cross-party compromise. At the centre, the coat of arms shows a mahogany tree, tools of the logging trade, and the national motto “Sub Umbra Floreo”, meaning “Under the shade I flourish”, a reference to the timber industry that shaped the country’s early economy.

History of the Belize Flag

The core design of the Belize flag dates back to 1950, when it was adopted as the banner of the People’s United Party during the campaign for self-government in what was then British Honduras. It stayed a party symbol for decades, but when Belize gained independence from Britain on 21 September 1981, the design was adapted as the new national flag, with red stripes added above and below the blue field as a gesture to political unity. The coat of arms at its centre has changed only in minor detail since.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Belize flag is flown at government offices, schools and public buildings across the country and is especially prominent around Independence Day celebrations each September. Because of its origins as a party emblem, flag protocol in Belize places some emphasis on treating it consistently as a national rather than a political symbol, and it should never be displayed in a damaged, discoloured or incorrectly proportioned form. It is commonly seen flown alongside the flags of Caribbean and Central American neighbours at regional events.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
