About the Brunei Darussalam Flag
The Brunei Darussalam flag combines a bright yellow field with diagonal white and black stripes and a red national crest set slightly toward the hoist. It is one of the more heraldically detailed flags in South East Asia, carrying a crest that itself contains several distinct symbols rather than a single simple emblem.
Colours and Symbolism
Yellow is the colour reserved for Brunei’s monarchy and forms the base of the flag. The white stripe running diagonally above the black one represents the country’s most senior minister, or wazir, while the black stripe stands for the next most senior, a pairing that dates back to the years before independence. The red crest at the centre of the Brunei Darussalam flag brings together a crescent moon, standing for Islam as the state religion, a royal parasol representing the monarchy, and a pair of upraised hands signifying unity and support for the government. A scroll beneath the crest carries the national motto in Arabic script, rendered in English as “Always render service with God’s guidance”.
History of the Brunei Darussalam Flag
A plain yellow flag was used by the Sultanate before the current design, yellow having long been set aside for the Sultan’s personal use. The white and black diagonal stripes were added in 1906, after Brunei became a British protectorate, to distinguish the state flag from the Sultan’s own yellow standard. The national crest was added once Brunei’s constitution was proclaimed on 29 September 1959, giving the Brunei Darussalam flag the layout still used today. When full independence from Britain was achieved on 1 January 1984, the existing flag was simply retained as the flag of the newly independent state rather than being redesigned.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The flag is flown at government buildings, schools and on national occasions such as National Day on 23 February. Because the crest sits slightly off centre rather than in the exact middle of the field, care is needed when reproducing the design so that the stripes and the crest’s position match the official proportions. As with most national flags, it should be raised briskly and lowered slowly, and it should never be allowed to touch the ground during a ceremony.

Order Lead Times
Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.
One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.
Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
