About the Cayman Islands Flag

The Cayman Islands flag is a blue ensign carrying the Union Jack in the canton and the territory’s coat of arms in the fly. The coat of arms is fairly detailed, showing a shield with a gold lion on a red field, blue and white wavy lines, and three green stars, topped by a turtle and a pineapple, with a scroll below carrying the territorial motto.

Colours and Symbolism

The blue field of the Cayman Islands flag follows the standard pattern used across several British overseas territories. Within the shield, the blue and white wavy lines evoke the Caribbean Sea, and the three green stars stand for the territory’s three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The gold lion on red represents the Cayman Islands’ historic ties to Britain. Above the shield, a turtle recalls the islands’ old Spanish name, Las Tortugas, and their long seafaring history, while a pineapple points to the territory’s close historic links with Jamaica, whose own coat of arms features pineapples. The motto on the scroll, “He hath founded it upon the seas”, is drawn from Psalm 24 and reflects the islands’ maritime setting.

History of the Cayman Islands Flag

Before the islands gained a coat of arms of their own, they were administered as a dependency of Jamaica and had no separate flag. The coat of arms was granted on 14 May 1958, and the Cayman Islands flag, a blue ensign defaced with that badge, followed in 1959 once the territory gained a greater degree of self-government. The design was updated in 1999, when the coat of arms carried on the ensign was enlarged to make it clearer at a distance.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Cayman Islands flag is flown at government buildings and on registered vessels, and appears widely across the islands on Constitution Day and other national occasions. As with other defaced ensigns, the Union Jack must sit correctly in the upper canton nearest the hoist, and the flag should never be flown inverted or with the badge facing the wrong way. A separate, simplified version of the coat of arms, without the ensign background, is also used on official stationery and signage across the territory.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
