About the Czech Republic Flag

The Czech Republic flag consists of a white upper band and a red lower band, divided by a blue triangle projecting from the hoist. It is the same flag used by the former Czechoslovakia from 1920 until that country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Rather than adopt an entirely new design, the newly formed Czech Republic kept the existing flag, a decision that was debated at the time but is now well established both at home and abroad.

Colours and Symbolism

White and red are the traditional colours of Bohemia, taken from the white lion on a red shield that has represented the Bohemian crown lands for centuries. The blue triangle on the Czech Republic flag was added in 1920 specifically to distinguish the new Czechoslovak flag from Poland’s, which used plain white over red, and it was also understood to represent Moravia and Slovakia as partners within the original Czechoslovak state. That same blue triangle continues to sit at the hoist today, even though Slovakia is no longer part of the country it represents.

History of the Czech Republic Flag

Czechoslovakia adopted this flag in 1920, two years after the country’s formation from parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. It flew through the interwar republic, the German occupation, the post-war communist period and the Velvet Revolution of 1989. When Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two states on 1 January 1993, Slovakia designed a new flag of its own, while the Czech Republic continued to use the Czechoslovak design. A 1992 law had technically stated the old flag should not be used by successor states alone, but the Czech Republic did so regardless, and this use is now fully accepted under Czech and international law.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Czech Republic flag is flown at government buildings, castles and public institutions across the country, and raised for national days including Czech Statehood Day. It is displayed at Prague Castle when the President is in residence, following a long-standing custom. As with other flags built around a hoist-side triangle, correct display keeps the point of the blue triangle reaching roughly to the centre of the flag, never flown upside down with the triangle pointing away from the pole.
