About the El Salvador Flag

The El Salvador flag is a blue-white-blue horizontal triband, a pattern it shares in spirit with several Central American neighbours because all trace back to the same regional union. On the state version, a coat of arms sits in the centre of the white stripe.

Colours and Symbolism

The two blue bands are usually explained as representing the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the waters bordering the old Central American isthmus, while the white band between them stands for peace and for the land itself. The coat of arms shows five volcanoes rising from the sea, one for each of the five nations that once made up the Federal Republic of Central America: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. A rainbow arches above the volcanoes, a Phrygian cap and rays of light sit above that, and a ribbon below carries the motto “Dios, Union, Libertad” – God, Union, Liberty.

History of the El Salvador Flag

The blue-white-blue design descends from the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America, which broke apart in 1841. El Salvador experimented with other flags in the decades that followed, including a red, white and blue design, before returning to the old federal colours. The current flag, with its coat of arms, was formally adopted in May 1912, deliberately reviving the union-era pattern as a statement of Central American unity even after the federation itself had long since dissolved. A plain version without the arms serves as the civil flag.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

El Salvador marks its independence on 15 September, shared with the rest of Central America, and flags are flown across the country in the lead-up to that date. Because the coat of arms is detailed and specific to the centre stripe, printed or embroidered versions of the flag need care to keep the volcanoes, rainbow and lettering legible at smaller sizes. The El Salvador flag is a common sight at Salvadoran community events abroad, often flown beside the flags of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica in recognition of their shared federal history.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
