Description

The Equatorial Guinea flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Equatorial Guinea Flag

The Equatorial Guinea flag is a horizontal tricolour of green, white and red, set apart by a blue triangle at the hoist and a coat of arms centred on the white stripe. It is one of the few African national flags to include a detailed tree emblem rather than a star or animal.

Colours and Symbolism

Green stands for the country’s forests and natural resources, white for peace, and red for the independence struggle. The blue triangle at the hoist represents the sea, a fitting inclusion for a nation made up of a mainland region, Rio Muni, and several islands including Bioko, where the capital Malabo sits. The coat of arms features a silk-cotton tree, sometimes called the God Tree, under which early agreements with Spanish colonial authorities are said to have been signed. Six yellow six-pointed stars arch above the tree, one for the mainland and one for each of the five main islands, and a ribbon below carries the motto “Unidad, Paz, Justicia” – Unity, Peace, Justice.

History of the Equatorial Guinea Flag

The flag was adopted in October 1968, the day the country gained independence from Spain, ending a colonial period that had lasted since the late 19th century. The design has stayed largely consistent since then, though the coat of arms was briefly altered in the 1970s under Francisco Macias Nguema’s government before being restored to its original form after 1979. Equatorial Guinea remains unusual as the only Spanish-speaking nation in sub-Saharan Africa, and the flag’s Spanish-language motto is a direct reflection of that colonial and linguistic history.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown on Independence Day each October and displayed on government buildings throughout the year. As with other flags carrying a central coat of arms, the tree emblem and stars should sit squarely within the white stripe, neither crowding the green nor the red bands above and below it. Because Equatorial Guinea’s population is relatively small and its diaspora modest compared with some neighbouring states, the flag is less commonly seen outside the country, which makes correctly sourced versions of the Equatorial Guinea flag harder to find than those of larger African nations.

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
