About the Micronesia Flag

Light blue fills almost the entire Micronesia flag, broken only by four small white stars set in a diamond pattern at the centre. The design is quiet compared with many Pacific flags, and that restraint is itself part of the story, since the flag grew directly out of the pale blue banner once used across a much larger stretch of the Pacific.

Colours and Symbolism

The blue field was chosen to echo the flag of the United Nations, under whose trusteeship the islands were administered for decades after the Second World War, and it also stands more simply for the Pacific Ocean surrounding the four states. Each of the four white stars on the Micronesia flag represents one of the states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. Arranged in a diamond rather than a row, the stars are meant to be read almost like points on a compass, with no single state placed above another.

History of the Micronesia Flag

Before the current design, the wider Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States, flew a flag with six white stars around a UN-blue field, one star for each of its districts, including Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. When those territories chose separate paths and the Federated States of Micronesia formed its own government, the flag was reduced to four stars for the four states that joined the federation. It was adopted on 30 November 1978, and the shade of blue was later deepened slightly following the 1986 Compact of Free Association with the United States.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Micronesia flag is flown outside government buildings in Palikir and across the four states, usually alongside each state’s own flag rather than in place of it, reflecting the country’s federal structure. It is displayed prominently on United Nations Day, a nod to its origins, as well as on the country’s own Constitution Day. Because the design is so simple, care is taken to keep the four stars evenly spaced in their diamond arrangement, since an uneven pattern is one of the more obvious ways a reproduction can look wrong.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.

Supplied in packs of 10. Printed on both sides onto polyester and supplied with a black plastic stick and removable base — take the base off and it doubles as a hand waving flag.
