The Moldova flag is available from Flags Online in full-size and desk formats, printed on both sides and made to last outdoors.

About the Moldova Flag

Blue, yellow and red run in vertical bands across the Moldova flag, and anyone familiar with Romania’s flag will recognise the arrangement immediately, since the two share the same three colours in the same order. What sets the Moldova flag apart is the coat of arms placed at the centre of the yellow stripe, an emblem absent from its Romanian counterpart.

Colours and Symbolism

The three stripes carry the same broad associations found in other blue, yellow and red tricolours in the region, but it is the coat of arms that does most of the symbolic work here. At its centre is a golden aurochs head, an animal long associated with the historic principality of Moldavia, flanked by a five-petalled rose and a crescent moon, with a star sitting between the horns. An eagle holds this shield in its talons, gripping an Orthodox cross in its beak and an olive branch in its claws, the branch marking a deliberate choice of peace over the sword some earlier versions of the emblem carried.

History of the Moldova Flag

The flag was adopted on 6 November 1990, while the country was still part of the Soviet Union, as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic moved to distance itself from Soviet symbols ahead of full independence the following year. Its close resemblance to Romania’s flag was intentional, reflecting a sense of shared history and language between the two countries. It took another two decades for the exact shades to be fixed in law, with a 2010 act specifying the particular tones of blue, yellow and red and standardising the coat of arms after the reverse of the Moldova flag was found to differ from the front.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The flag is flown across government buildings in Chisinau and other cities, and is a fixture of Independence Day events on 27 August as well as a separate Flag Day marked each April. Because the coat of arms must appear correctly on both sides of the flag under the 2010 standard, a poorly made Moldova flag can sometimes show the emblem mirrored or faded on its reverse, which is worth checking for on any flag intended for outdoor or ceremonial use. It is generally flown alongside the flags of local government or twinned regions rather than alone.

Ordering and Delivery

Order Lead Times

Almost everything we make is freshly printed and made to order, just for you! So please allow 3–5 working days for us to prepare your order before it heads out the door. We’ll always try to get it to you sooner where we can. Some fast movers, like South African flags, ship quicker as they’re often in stock.

One quick thing to keep in mind: the “next working day” you see on your order confirmation is the courier’s delivery time from the day we dispatch — not from the day you place your order. So it’s really 3–5 days to prepare + next-day delivery.

Good things are worth the wait — we’re excited to get your order into your hands.
