About the Slovenia Flag
Slovenia’s flag shares its white, blue and red stripes with several other Slavic nations, but a small coat of arms in the upper hoist corner sets it apart. Adopted in the days immediately following independence in 1991, the Slovenia flag combines an old Pan-Slavic colour scheme with newer symbols chosen specifically to represent the country’s geography.
Colours and Symbolism
The three horizontal bands, white, blue and red, are Pan-Slavic colours with roots in nineteenth-century movements for Slavic unity, and they were carried over from flags used in the region before independence. The coat of arms sits in the canton and shows Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, picked out in white against a blue background. Below the mountain, two wavy blue lines represent the Adriatic Sea and the country’s rivers. Above it, three six-pointed gold stars are arranged in an inverted triangle, taken from the historic coat of arms of the Counts of Celje, a noble Slovene dynasty from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Between them, the mountain, water and stars tie the Slovenia flag to both the country’s landscape and its pre-modern history.
History of the Slovenia Flag
Before independence, Slovenia flew a version of the same white-blue-red tricolour but with a red star, similar to other republics within socialist Yugoslavia. As Yugoslavia broke apart, Slovenia declared independence on 25 June 1991, and the new flag, with the red star removed and replaced by the current coat of arms designed by Marko Pogačnik, was adopted two days later on 27 June 1991. Reaching agreement on the coat of arms took some negotiation, since a number of alternative designs were put forward before the Triglav-based emblem was settled on. The result is a flag that looks similar to Slovakia’s and Russia’s at a glance but is easy to tell apart once the coat of arms is visible.
Flying and Displaying the Flag
The Slovenia flag is flown at public buildings throughout the country and is especially visible around Statehood Day on 25 June, which marks independence, and Flag Day on 26 December. It should be hung with the coat of arms in the upper hoist corner, keeping the mountain, water and stars the right way up, since an inverted or reversed flag is a common mistake given how similar the base tricolour is to those of neighbouring countries. Outdoor Slovenia flags benefit from decent quality fabric, since the fine detail in the coat of arms can be lost on cheaper prints once the flag starts to fade.
