About the Trinidad and Tobago Flag

The Trinidad and Tobago flag is a red field crossed by a black diagonal band edged in white, a striking and unusual design among Caribbean flags. It has represented the twin-island republic since independence from Britain in 1962 and remains one of the more instantly recognisable flags in the region because of its diagonal, rather than horizontal or vertical, arrangement of colour.

Colours and Symbolism

The diagonal black band runs from the upper hoist corner to the lower fly corner, bordered on each side by a narrow white stripe, against a red background. Red is said to represent the vitality of the land, the warmth of the sun and the courage and friendliness of the people. Black stands for the unity, strength, purpose and wealth of the nation and its people, while white represents the sea surrounding the two islands, the equality of all citizens, and the purity of the country’s aspirations. Together the colours were chosen to reflect earth, water and fire, the elements the design’s creators associated with the islands.

History of the Trinidad and Tobago Flag

Before independence, Trinidad and Tobago flew a British colonial ensign featuring the Union Jack and a local badge. The current Trinidad and Tobago flag was adopted on 31 August 1962, the day the country became independent, having been chosen through a national committee process that considered a number of alternative designs. The diagonal band was a deliberate departure from the more common horizontal tricolours used by other newly independent Caribbean nations, giving Trinidad and Tobago a flag with its own visual identity from the outset.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

The Trinidad and Tobago flag is flown throughout the year at government buildings and schools, and is especially prominent during Independence Day celebrations on 31 August and around Carnival. When displayed correctly, the black diagonal band runs from the top left to the bottom right as viewed from the front, with the white borders evenly spaced on either side. The flag is a familiar sight at cricket and football matches, where it is carried and worn by supporters as a mark of national pride.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
