About the Tristan Da Cunha Flag

The Tristan Da Cunha flag follows the pattern used by many British overseas territories: a dark blue ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and a local badge set in the fly. It represents Tristan Da Cunha, the remote South Atlantic island group that forms part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, and is among the most isolated inhabited places to have its own flag.

Colours and Symbolism

Against the dark blue field of the ensign, the Union Jack in the upper hoist signals the territory’s constitutional link to the United Kingdom, a feature shared with the flags of Saint Helena and Ascension Island. In the fly sits Tristan Da Cunha’s own badge, based on its coat of arms, which depicts a longboat on a wavy sea, referencing the small boats islanders have long used to land supplies and reach passing ships on a coastline with no natural harbour. A rockhopper penguin, one of the island’s most recognisable native species, appears as part of the crest above the shield.

History of the Tristan Da Cunha Flag

Tristan Da Cunha was settled in the early nineteenth century and administered for many years as a dependency of Saint Helena, without a coat of arms or flag of its own for most of that period. A formal coat of arms for the island was granted in 2002, and the Tristan Da Cunha flag in its current form, incorporating that badge into a blue ensign, followed from this grant. Before this, any local flag use would have relied on the wider colonial ensign of Saint Helena, since the island group did not have a distinct armorial identity until the twenty-first century.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Given Tristan Da Cunha’s tiny population and remote location, roughly halfway between South Africa and South America, the Tristan Da Cunha flag is flown mainly on the island itself, at the settlement of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, and occasionally by the wider Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha administration. As a British ensign, it follows the same basic display conventions as other overseas territory flags, flown with the Union Jack canton at the top hoist corner. For collectors and flag enthusiasts, it remains one of the rarer territorial flags to see in physical form, given how few visitors reach the island each year.
