About the Eritrea Flag

The Eritrea flag is built around a striking red triangle that stretches from the hoist to the fly, flanked by a green triangle along the top edge and a blue triangle along the bottom. At the centre of the red triangle sits a gold wreath encircling an olive branch.

Colours and Symbolism

Green represents the country’s agricultural land, and blue stands for the Red Sea, along whose coastline much of Eritrea sits. Red, the largest of the three shapes, recalls the blood shed during the long war of independence against Ethiopia. The gold olive wreath and branch at the centre echo the emblem on the flag of the United Nations, a deliberate reference to the UN’s role in Eritrea’s post-war history, when the territory was federated with Ethiopia under UN supervision in the early 1950s before that arrangement broke down and the two countries were later merged outright.

History of the Eritrea Flag

The current flag was formally adopted in December 1995, a couple of years after Eritrea’s independence was confirmed by referendum in 1993 following a thirty-year armed struggle. Its design is based closely on the flag used by the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front during that struggle, which itself echoed an earlier Eritrean flag flown briefly in the 1950s during the UN-administered federation period. That earlier flag was a plain green field with a central olive wreath on light blue, and its symbolism was carried forward into the design used today, adapted into the current triangular layout.

Flying and Displaying the Flag

Eritrea marks its independence on 24 May, and the flag is displayed extensively in Asmara and other towns around that date. The triangular geometry means the flag reads differently depending on which side is shown, so care should be taken that the red triangle’s point sits correctly at the fly end rather than being mirrored, and that the wreath stays centred rather than drifting toward the hoist. Given Eritrea’s relatively closed borders and limited international travel in recent years, the Eritrea flag is seen abroad mainly within diaspora communities, where it carries strong significance tied to the independence struggle it commemorates.

Material and Construction

Made from 100% polyester bunting material and digitally printed on both sides. Hemmed all around with two rows of stitching and finished with a polyester webbing heading. Rope and toggle for hoisting included.
